The African Grey Parrot is native to west and central Africa. You will find them mostly in forest areas but will feed in the savanna woodlands, plantations and remnant trees around villages. The wild population numbers are dwindling in West Africa due to deforestation and trapping for the pet trade. Between 1980 and 2003 860,000 African Grey Parrots were trapped and exported. Because of this, they are close to being at the threatened level as a species.

At dusk, they will flock in large numbers from far distances to roost together in the tall trees at the edge of the forest. While grouping for the night, they will be very vocal. They will also be very vocal in the morning when they roost is dispersing for the day.

Africa Grey vocalizations are a medley of squawks, high-pitched screams, prolonged whistling notes and does mimic calls of other birds.

They do nest in colonies and each pair will pick individual trees that they will utilize a tree cavity as their location for laying their eggs. 3-5 eggs will be laid and incubated by the female only. The eggs hatch at around 30 days. The nestlings will fledge at 12 weeks and will stay in the family group for 2-3 years as to the age they will sexually mature and may move to another colony for breeding. The average lifespan in the wild is 22 years but can averagely live to 45 years in captivity.

African Grey as a pet

The caging size recommended for an African Grey is 3 ft x 2 ft x 4ft tall with ¾ - 1 inch bar spacing. The larger the cage you can provide, the better.

Diet is to be a mix of fresh fruits and vegetables along with selected grains. A base diet of a high quality pellet diet. Make sure to regulate your parrot's diet because obesity is a common problem in pet birds and will lead to health problems.

Bathing is important for feather health and can be given by using a spray bottle or having a perch in the shower for your bird to enjoy the “rain.”

This species is considered the most intelligent of parrots and will need enrichment throughout their lives. This can be accomplished by supplying toys that allow foraging, problem solving, and chewing along with training sessions and quality time spent with your pet. The toys in the cage should be changed out regularly to prevent boredom. As with all pet birds, greys will respond best to positive reinforcement. This is done by making the training session positive, rewarding, and enjoyable for the bird. Keep the sessions short at about 15 minutes per session and do multiple each day. African Greys are great mimickers. They have the ability to mimic human speech but not all greys will speak.
