Types of Amazons For Sale

Amazon Parrots

With 30 different species, the amazon parrot does come in different sizes. The smallest amazon parrots are the White-fronted Amazon (Amazona albifrons) and Black-billed Amazon (Amazona agilis) which are both 10 inches in length. In the United States, the White-fronted Amazon is available to purchase as a pet.The largest amazon parrot is St. Lucia Amazon (Amazona versicolo) that is 17 inches in length. The largest species that are available in the USA to buy for a pet is the Mealy Amazon (Amazona farinosa) which is 16 inches in length. Amazons have the majority of their body covered in green feathers and each species will have patches or areas of other colored feathers. You cannot tell male and female easily by feather color. The juveniles do have duller plumage than adults.

Amazon Parrots will eat a wide variety of foods in the wild. They will eat fruits, blossoms, insects, eggs and seed. They will also eat at exposed earth-banks to eat the exposed mineral clay.

The age at which an amazon sexually matures varies with species but is from 4 to 6 years old. They will choose tree hollows, cliff cavities and other hollows for their nest. The clutch size will vary with species but the average is 2-4 eggs. Eggs are incubated varies from species but range from 24 days to 30 days. The young will fledge within 45 to 60 days depending on species and feeding on their own by 4 months old.

Amazon Parrots as a pet

An amazon parrot can be a wonderful pet. But are not for everyone. A few amazon species are known to be able to have a large vocabulary while others will not clearly be able to mimic any words.

What do Amazons eat?

A pet amazon parrot should be fed a pellet base diet that will provide them with a complete diet. A seed-only diet is highly not recommended. It is unbalanced and does cause birds to easily become obese. Along with the pellets, you should provide fresh fruits, vegetables, insects, and small amounts of human food like spaghetti. But watch as some foods can be toxic so check to make sure it will not harm your pet before feeding.

Bathing is important for feather health and can be given by using a spray bottle or having a perch in the shower for your bird to enjoy the “rain.”

Parrots can get bored being in the cage all day which can lead to behavior problems like feather plucking. You need to keep their lives enriched. This can be accomplished by supplying toys that allow foraging, problem-solving, and chewing along with training sessions and quality time spent with your pet. The toys in the cage should be changed out regularly to prevent boredom. As with all pet birds, amazons will respond best to positive reinforcement. This is done by making the training session all positive, rewarding and enjoyable for the bird. Keep the sessions short at about 15 minutes per session and do multiple each day.
